Excellent scores for three Bodegas Sobreño wines in the James Suckling report

Date: 29 July 2019

The American critic qualifies with 92 points Finca Sobreño Crianza 2016 and Ildefonso 2015, and Finca Sobreño Organic 2018 receives 91 points.

Last summer, the specialist tasted more than 2,100 Spanish wines, and he reaffirmed that the country “is currently making some of the most drinkable and characterful wines in the world at the moment”.

James Suckling’s 2019 report scores three wines of Bodegas Sobreño with excellent ratings. The American critic visited Spain last summer to taste more than 2,100 wines in about ten days. The results have been known this week. In his opinion, it was “a great experience, with many excellent wines, meetings and tastings with winemakers from Spain who reaffirmed to me that the country is currently making some of the most drinkable and characterful wines in the world at the moment”.

Some of these wines came from Bodegas Sobreño. Specifically, three of them: Finca Sobreño Crianza 2016 and Ildefonso 2015 (92 points both); and Finca Sobreño Organic 2018, with 91.

James Suckling finds in Finca Sobreño Crianza 2016 “biscuit-like aromas with grilled nuts and chocolate oak-influence, across ripe dark berries. The palate has a very succulent, sweet-fruit core with plenty of ripe mulberries and plums. Supple tannins”. And he recommends: “drink now or hold”.

The American critic awards Ildefonso 2015 with the same score and highlights: “An ultra rich and ripe style that is packed with very, very ripe plums and dark berries and assertive, rich tannins. The extract is impressive”. Suckling believes that this wine “needs time” and recommends trying it “from 2024”.

Finca Sobreño Organic 2018 is also very well valued by Stuckling, with 91 points. In his opinion, “the aromas of fresh, ripe cassis and blueberries” of this wine” lead to “a palate that has a very plush, fine and smooth feel with plenty of dark-berry essence at the soft, even finish”. In addition, it is recommended to drink “now”.
